Dealing With Nerves When Singing

One type of anxiety that is a huge problem for singers and artists is performance anxiety. Finding ways of dealing with anxiety and turning nerves and adrenaline into positive forces in your performance are just as important as great technique and knowing what you’re afraid of is half the battle. It’s important to identify the source of fear, in order to deal with it successfully.

These are some of the most common fears: cracking during a performance, making a fool of yourself in front of friends, forgetting words, constantly worrying about success or failure, rejection, and the list goes on. Naming the fear enables you to go after the problem and beat it. When you understand the problem, take the time to deal with the source of your fear as opposed to just the symptoms.

When you have an adrenaline rush in the body, it results in a racing heart. You can duplicate that feeling by running in place until you’re out of breath and then sing your song. Being out of breath while you practice helps you get used to singing phrases where you desperately want to just exhale and not sing. The feeling you get when you’re out of breath is very similar to the way you feel when performance anxiety takes over. Your breaths will feel like they are falling into your body. When this happens just realize you can sing even when the heart is pounding relentlessly. It’s not easy, but it is possible.

Did you know thousands of people have this feeling right before a performance? Everyone experiences anxiety differently but there are several common symptoms that can surface such as; shaky hands, nausea, butterflies in the stomach, sweaty armpits, the urge to cry, nausea.  an almost an endless list.

Assuming that you must be calm before a performance is the same as setting yourself up for huge pangs of anxiety when you don’t turn out to be as cool as a cucumber. If you expect the nervous feelings, you’ll be in a much better position to sing through them. In fact, you can use the fight-or-flight excitement of adrenaline coursing through your body to enhance your performance. Just by reframing the thought process and acknowledging your nerves, will allow you to seize the opportunity and improve your performance.
