Digital Video Capture

Digital video capture has become easier and easier with the new accessories like universal remote control and high tech camera lens and surround sound technology, yet we still can’t call it piece of cake. Shooting the scenes may seem easy when someone else is performing the task, but when you try it on your own, there are obstacles to face. With a few clicks you may expect to create some cinematic masterpiece. Things could nevertheless get a lot trickier. Digital video capture depends on compression because motion pictures take a lot of bandwidth, time and storage space.

Things used to be simpler with the compression-decompression process for analog videos. Yet, image quality was sacrificed all the time. Digital video capture is the superior technological process, and it represents a step forward in terms of quality video shooting.

The solution for the compression-decompression process came from the invention of the CODEC algorithms that work for the adjustment of the video to a computer by digitizing and compressing pictures. PCs often come with pre-installed CODECs, particularly the newer models. CODECs can also be downloaded online. M-JPEG or JPEG algorithms enjoy the best reputation. Digital video capture therefore has a complexity that the regular camcorder user does not even suspect.

The best type of digital video capture is performed with a special type of capture card also known as firewire or IEEE. Without the use of this card, lots of quality of the material is lost during the transfer process to the computer. Professionals further rely on the use of more advanced digital video cards but they are out of the average consumer’s reach by the very high prices. This does not mean that you can’t get decent quality for a good price too.

The transfer rate of the stored data is very important for digital video capture, and you should look for devices that allow a transfer rate of up to 400 Mbps. When the transfer rate is lower, the processing of data from the camcorder into the computer gets difficult. The ports in the new computer models are built in to easily use the card, so that you don’t have to improvise. Check whether the digital video card is compatible with your computer or not so as to make a good choice of products.
