Looking after your vocal health for singers

As you learn to sing, there are a few things that can happen, and you need to be ready for them You are going to catch that cold or sore throat and you have to know how to deal with it. The following is some advice that will help you when the inevitable strikes.

Avoid most nose sprays to maintain your vocal health

There are nasal sprays that contain certain elements that can actually become addictive and cause more problems. You may find that you need to use these sprays, but try to refrain from it as much as possible.

Drink Water

Taking OTC meds can cause you to dry out. If you are ready for this and make sure to hydrate yourself, you won't have a big problem.

Use Nasal Saline Spray

As your body tries to wash out the germs (runny nose), you can use a nasal saline solution to help fight against the infection. If you use Nasal Saline Spray, then be very careful to keep the lid on it. Place the nozzle close enough to your nose to get in a good squirt but not so close that the cold germs from your nose get on the nozzle.

A Humidifier will help greatly

During the winter you might find that the heater dries out your home. That being the case, keep a humidifier running. To keep it from growing mold, rinse it out every day. You should keep it running as much as possible, but it would be best to turn it off if you find too much condensation on your windows.

Thin out your mucus

You need to thin out your mucus if you find that you have a postnasal drip. Your doctor can help you get medications or saline that will thin out the mucus.

If you use throat lozenges, use the non sweetened variety

A dry throat can lead to painful coughs, and throat lozenges will help to reduce that. Most lozenges are just candy that you would find in the medicine aisle. If you can find lozenges without sugar then you will be much better off because you won't have as many dental problems. Beware of lozenges with menthol, which can dry out your throat.
